Night and Day Exhibition

I think that our exhibition in the Night and Day cafe was quite a success, I think everything came together well. Everyone's final outcomes looked great on the night and I think the people who came seemed to have a good time, i also think that the location we choose was quite good to suit our project as it fits well with the theme of the Northern Quarter.

Setting up the exhibition.. we took our work down to the Night and Day cafe on the Tuesday morning of our exhibition to set up our work, it went quite smoothly compared to previous exhibitions i have set up in the past.

This is my submission in the exhibition, it is an oil painting in an abstract expressionist style based my drawings of buildings from around the Northern Quarter. I was quite happy with my final outcome and I think i will create more paintings like this in the future.

Unit X Studio Work

This was an oil painting i did on paper that i didn't put in the exhibition, it is based on some photographs of buildings around the Northern Quarter. I think that this painting is a good starting point as a study piece.
This was another painting that din't go in the exhibition, it is oil on canvas, I liked the stle which I painted it in however I felt that the colours were too muddy and dark.

This is an oil on paper study based on my photographic studies of the Night and Day Cafe. I particularly like the pink colour in the painting in contrast with the black lines, i think it has some similarities to the works of Philip Guston.

This is another oil on paper study i did on the Northern quarter, this one focuses on my interpretation of the street art and the Graffiti around he Northern Quarter.

Here I was experimenting using emulsion paint to create different effects with line and tone in my work. I think the painting style i have used here is quite similar to the work of Franz Kline.

This is another emulsion paining on paper, trying to convey different aspects of the Northern Quarter.

This was my first painting using emulsion on paper, here I have only used one colour.

Here I used oil paint on card to create a monotone painting, I wanted to experiment further with my use of line and tone, this painting is based on my photographs from around the Northern Quarter.

These are photos which I took around the Northern Quarter to use for painting studies, I particularly like the graffiti and street art on the walls around the Northern Quarter.

I also did some Photoshop work but decided not to pursue it and instead focus on my painting.

These are my drawing studies from the Northern Quarter. I find this a very useful way of creating a starting point for my practical work as it is quite a quick way to capture visual information about a subject.

The posters we stuck around the Northern Quarter were screenprints taken from our original poster design. We used these to advertise our campaign. We decided that bright green with white text suited the poster best as it stood ou the most and could represent cleanness and being environmentally friendly.

These Are some photos of the night and day cafe which is going to be our location for our exhibition. I think the space is quite good because it has a large open area and fits nicely with the theme of the Northern quarter. I also think it will work well on the night of the exhibition as people can relax and sit down at the tables.

This was our Facebook page we used to promote our campaign. It was the site or posters linked to.

The design for our logo for our campaign came from the idea of combining the elements of the X in the words unit x, and the Q in Northern Quarter.

We created posters with our logo for our campaign, these were to be distributed around the Northern Quarter to raise awareness of our campaign. The posters had a simple minimalistic design, which included only the logo and a web address.

In our group we arranged to meet regularly, once or twice a week to discuss and work on ideas for the project, we started by creating a mind map of what we knew about the Northern Quarter which led us to the idea of creating a fictional campaign to promote the protection of the Northern Quarter called Maintenance Northern Quarter.
